The freshman and sophomore aquatics program has returned to physical education classes at Shadow Hills High School after a five-year hiatus.
The swimming unit was originally suspended after a lifeguard was unavailable when the program was scheduled to begin. Its return provides a way for students to manage the desert heat, though the transition back to the pool brings mixed emotions regarding locker room changes and swimwear.
Freshman Jesse Torres said he is grateful for the opportunity to swim this year.
“I feel like most students will [enjoy it], cooling down from the heat is definitely going to feel great,” Torres said.
For some upperclassmen, the return of the program is a reminder of what they missed. Senior Deven Gonzalez said he was disappointed he could not swim during his sophomore year.
“I was lowkey bummed out,” Gonzalez said. “It was really hot and I was excited to swim.”
While Gonzalez is glad younger students have the opportunity now, he noted that some may still be hesitant.
“I think some of them [will enjoy it], not all of them though because not many people like wearing swimming attire,” Gonzalez said.
As the unit begins, Gonzalez offered advice to those heading to the pool: “If you get to swim this year, enjoy it as best you can.”
