As the school year nears its end, most students are wondering what they will be doing with their summer and all the free time they will have.
On April 9, Shadow Hills High School hosted a job fair in the gym for students who are 16 or older. There were more than 20 companies on hand, ready to help students jump start their futures.
Many of the jobs required applicants to be 18 or older, but the main reason for the job fair was to show students what’s available to them in our community. Students were encouraged to bring resumes and be prepared for on-the-spot interviews.
Desert Sands Unified School District’s Director of Classified Personnel Brad Fisher explained the importance of the event. “It’s a chance to meet with people and start getting that interaction face to face,” he said.
He also pointed out how important it is to really throw yourself out there and take risks to get out of your comfort zone. He explained that job fairs helped him in the past, and even helped him get the job he has today.
Jorge Guzman, human resource recruiter at Fantasy Springs Casino, pointed out, “It’s helping [students] get into the game.”
Even though students might not be hired the first few times, the experience helps them get a better understanding of what to do next time.
“I am looking forward to finding a summer job,” said Karla Cerda (26’) as she walked through the gym during the fair.
Some students were thinking further into the future.
“I’m looking forward to new things I could pursue after high school,” explained Danica Arrieta (26’).
Many students are looking forward to the opportunity to work more and gain job experience during the summer break. In total, there were about 350 students who visited the job fair, and many left their resumes with company representatives.
