As the school week draws to a close, many are still talking about Monday morning. Before the sun’s heat rippled across the Valley, a large group gathered as one to honor fallen soldiers.
On August 26 students, staff, and local officials met at Shadow Hills High School, traveled south along Jefferson, stopping at the top of the bridge for a moment of silence, before returning to campus. The annual event marks the third anniversary of the death of Cpl. Hunter Lopez – a Valley native and former DSUSD student – and 12 other Service Members in Afghanistan on August 26, 2021.
Coach Richard Romo, Shadow’s Assistant Athletic Director, is a former Marine. When he learned of the soldiers’ deaths, he, Coach Davis, and Coach DeTamble decided the school needed to do something to honor the fallen. They decided to organize a run before school to show gratitude. The number of participants has grown each year.
This year more than 100 people attended the event, including the family of Hunter Lopez. For some, it’s personal; they’re honoring family members who have served. For others, it’s an opportunity to show respect.
Senior Brianna Burciaga spoke with Knight Times staff about the personal connection she had to the memorial and why she chose to participate.
“Personally to honor all the soldiers who fought and lost their lives to protect us…my father was [a veteran]. He had served and it was very overwhelming so it’s honorable to come out here and spend your time.”
Senior Alexia Sanchez explained why she participated in the memorial run, and why she didn’t think twice about being at school before sunrise.
“I’m sacrificing something just like they sacrificed their lives for us and I think it’s the absolute very least I can do for them and their families.”
