More than 150 students from valley schools attended the Youth Desert Town Hall, interacting with NATO’s former 16th Supreme Allied Commander and CBS Sunday Morning’s Science Correspondent. The lectures, hosted by Desert Town Hall, gather influential minds to engage with valley residents. The Youth Town Hall allows for students across the desert to participate in these discussions.
The first lecturer was Admiral James Stavridis, former NATO’s 16th Supreme Allied Commander and author. He spoke with students prior to his lecture on Jan. 21. He left students with four lessons that he learned from his extensive career. Wear more sunscreen, read more books, and stay in shape. Finally, Adm. Stavridis emphasized to students, “at some point in your life find some time to serve others.”
Throughout his presentation, Adm. Stavridis made 21st war conflicts century approachable and engaging for all ages. Despite his lengthy title, he made self-deprecating jokes, and jabs at other leaders. He turned a seemingly-trivial topic into an intriguing seminar about foreign affairs.
The second lecture, on Feb. 8 , featured David Pogue, CBS’s Sunday Morning’s Science Correspondent and author of more than 120 books. Prior to his lecture, Pogue shared his experience covering an Oceangate trip. During his talk on the future of artificial intelligence, Pogue used witty punchlines, relevant memes, and a song to convey his message. A topic that has sparked fear in many became one of human development. Pogue highlighted, “every invention triggers the same panic.”
Desert Town Hall, despite some criticism for a lack of diversity, provided relevant speakers who addressed the current world climate. Senior Evelyn Walker notes, “It was a good opportunity to hear what someone successful has to say and learn from them.”
Youth Town Hall offers students the chance to socialize with other students in the Coachella Valley while learning about current world affairs. Events such as these play a crucial role in nurturing the future leaders of the world.
