Tuesday, Aug. 20 marked the first day of school for all Desert Sands Unified School District. As campuses across the Coachella Valley come to life, students of all ages flood the hallways with a mix of excitement and first-day jitters. Marking the new school year in session.
At Shadow Hills High School, the day opened with a vibrant display of school spirit. From the drums of the marching band to the applause of the cheerleaders, there was a welcoming atmosphere for students walking down the tunnel as they entered campus. More than 1700 students are welcomed back this year, setting the stage for a promising new school year.
Amidst the bustling energy, students’ feelings about this new school vary. Some experience nerves as they navigate the challenges of starting at a new school or entering their final year. Others are eager for the opportunities the new year brings.
“I’m super excited because it’s my senior season and I think we have a lot of great school spirit coming,” said Priscilla Guajardo.
This year is sure to be memorable with a lineup of events and changes on the horizon. Highlights include the eighth annual Mayor’s Cup between Shadow Hills and Indio, coming up this Friday evening. Additionally, the school introduced new athletics director Jody Davis, the former Girls’ Wrestling coach and science teacher, who is injecting fresh ideas for the new academic year.
As the year unfolds, Shadow Hills is bound to create lasting memories and embrace the new opportunities that lie ahead. In particular, Shadow Hills Principal Dr. Dunn expresses his hopes for the new year.
“That it is so important to me that [students] enjoy their high school experience by being involved and that they are a part of Shadow,” Dunn explained.
