In the Heights may have closed, but the energy from this year’s spring musical is still palpable around campus. Crowds of family and friends of the cast and crew filled the Performing Arts Center the first weekend in April to see the lively musical, set in Washington Heights, a neighborhood of Manhattan.
Based on the audience reactions to the jokes, music and dance numbers, and poignant moments, the show was a hit.
“Getting people to laugh in the audience, that was the best experience,” said Verina Ramirez (‘27).
Many of the songs had the audience speechless. The cast members sang solos, duets, and as an ensemble. The songs were lively, and gave the actors the opportunity to showcase their talents. They also made an impression on attendees who might not normally go see a live theatre performance.
“People who don’t even like theater are getting into it because of this musical,” Vivica Ramirez (‘25) pointed out.
In the Heights was also a bonding opportunity for the cast and crew. The tight-knit community of student performers grew even closer during the rehearsal and production process. The show closed with Senior Knight, a Shadow tradition to honor seniors’ commitment to their extra-curricular activities.
With a large group of talented and dedicated Seniors graduating next month, the spotlight shifts to the underclassman. They have spent this school year watching and learning from the oldest students in the program.
“I think the highlight is getting to meet so many new people, and just watching their talents and how they perform,” said Taryn Ortega (‘27).
